It’s important to understand that Shimano Reels are grouped into five major categories:

Today we’ll discuss Shimano’s Conventional line of fishing reels. Shimano Conventional reels are an excellent choice for both offshore saltwater fishing as well as blue water fishing.

If you didn’t know (and don’t be ashamed guys), offshore saltwater fishing is fishing away from the shore, usually on a boat. Offshore saltwater fishing includes the following types (but is not limited to) of fishing: bottom fishing, angling, blue water fishing, and many more types of fishing.

Blue water fishing is exactly what it sounds like – fishing in blue water! Fish for cod, shark, and bluefin fish with a great conventional reel from Shimano.

Your choices of walleye fishing reels depends on your walleye fishing technique. Anglers who regularly use several fishing techniques during a day of fishing often include in their walleye fishing tackle, three or four combo rod & reel outfits, each set up different with lures or live bait setups.
I recommend you use the following tips when you select your walleye fishing reels to mount to your walleye fishing rods.
For good sensitivity and casting performance , your reel must balance with your rod. Check the lure and line weight recommendations on both your walleye fishing rod and walleye fishing reel to make sure they are a match. For example, if you attempt to use a reel intended for 12 – to- 20 pound line with a rod designed for 4 to 8 pound test the outfit will be butt-heavy.Too much weight on the butt end makes casting difficult because it interferes with your wrist snap. And weight dampens the sensation from a subtle bite. Matching rod and reel combinations are a must, and One of the most important pieces of your walleye fishing tackle.
When selecting a Spinning reel, look for the following features:
#1 The reel you select should have the drag mechanism mounted in the rear of the reel
#2 Make sure the reel has a skirted spool of adequate size to hold at least 100yards of line.
#3 A bail with strong spring tension. If the bail does not close all the way, the line will ride on the bail itself rather than on the roller. When you attempt to set the hook, the bail will open up enough to line come off of the spool. Some of the best spinning reels have a spring on each side of the bail.
#4 A free-turning bail roller. The roller must must turn when the line passes over, If it does not, heat and abrasion will damage the line and may wear a grove in the roller.
#5 Interchangeable spools. These spools snap into the reel, enabling you to quickly change to a different weight of line or type of line, or to replace a half empty spool with afull one.
If you are looking to add more options to your walleye fishing tackle, make sure when you pick a walleye fishing baiting casting reel you take a very close look at the backlash mechanism. The Backlash resistance is the most important feature of a bait casting reel. A good bait casting reel is a excellent choice for a walleye fishing reel if the reel has a type of magnetic or centrifugal brake system to keep backlash to a minimum. A high gear ratio is not a requirement for walleye fishing because fast retrieves are seldom needed. A gear ratio of 4:1 is usually adequate. You may be able to find a good bait casting reel that has multiple spools, for quick change of line. This especially handy when you are trolling for walleye.
Although most experienced walleye fisherman frown on spin casting gear, it remains a favorite among many anglers. If you purchase a spin casting reel make sure it has a smooth drag and a reliable line pickup mechanism. Unless the line is taut, the mechanism on a cheap spin cast reel often fails to pick up the line when you turn the handle.

Fishing reels have come a long way over the years from the typical conventional reels that were being made back in the day. It would be very easy for any novice or person just starting out with fishing as a hobby to easily get confused about the astonishing amount of choices on the market today. The first reel that I started out with was a closed face fishing reel made by Zebco. These reels are great for beginners. Why you may ask, well because pond fish won’t put the reel under as much duress as a fish caught in the lakes and bays or ocean where they have much more room to roam. If you are past the closed face reel stage you can then think about graduating up to a spinning reel. Spinning reels are also sometimes referred to as spincaster reels. These reels are called spinning reels for a reason. Spinning reels basically spin the line around a spool while the action in the turning shoots the spool up and down to keep the line uniform. These reels are a little harder to use in that you don’t have the push button release of a closed face reel you have a bail to work with. Don’t fret though as even a novice fisherman can pick this up fairly quickly. Simply hold the line pressed between your index finger and the rod and rear back and throw. Be sure to let the line loose from your finger in your forward motion.

Probably one of the hardest and most frustrating types of reels for any fisherman to throw is a baitcaster. These reels also have a push button type of release but you have to keep your finger planted firmly on the spool when you press the release button and during your throwing motion again only releasing your finger when the rod is at the front-end of your cast. The reason they are the hardest and most frustrating to cast is because they have a tendency to backlash if not thrown properly. Backlash is simply when the line gets tangled all in the spool and becomes very hard to untangle. This is a fisherman’s nightmare especially if you have been catching fish. That being said, they are probably also the most loved fishing reels of avid fisherman as when you do practice with it and get to where you are not backlashing the distance and smoothness you get from a cast is incomparable. Add in the fact that these reels can typically handle any duress that a fish can throw at it and you have a winning combination.
